Creating a romantic home… February is the month for love– let’s visit love in design. When we design our homes we are always after a visual impact for a buyer, creating a model home atmosphere. Whether you are for sale or not, you want your home to reflect a sense of simple elegance. I like to design with red (to symbolize passion). My Grandmother had a bit of red in each room and that was her signature to a well-designed space.
I may not go too far with red– but I do like some pop of red every so often. Red roses, for instance in a bathroom all cut the same length in a square or round, shorter vase is a great way to allure; the velvet texture of a fresh, fragrant rose- you can almost meet all the senses with this one element!
Add more of a romantic touch with candles… our bathroom designs are modeled after spas so we always have a stack of fresh, clean towels, wonderful books and accessories to imply or suggest to the mind of romance. Create a space of relaxation– a hot spa bath with bath salts and creams (luxury).
You can go further with the idea to other areas of your home. Master bedrooms (even if nothing is happening romance-wise) you want it to look like it. Use tone on tones for a monochromatic look – pewter is a hot color right now along with taupe and cream combination blending soft hues of soothing colors. Use suggestive and elegant layering of textures in fabrics and warmth for your bed. I like to wrap my mattresses with a feather bed for fullness then the next layer would be sheets, a coverlet of herringbone wool or cotton blanket followed with a beautiful duvet folded toward the end of bed. I would bring in a few pillows to finish the look.
Next, plan that special evening with a fine wine, dinner and dessert (chocolate of course) along with the perfect music to enhance designing the senses in your home.
Here’s a chocolate cake you can make for your someone special
Bring to boil in pot:
1 C water
2 sticks of butter (1 C)
¼ C heaping hersheys cocoa
Pour hot mixture to
2 C cake flour
2 C fine bakers sugar
then add to mixture above:
½ C sour cream
1 t vanilla
1 t baking soda
fold in 1 .5 C of semi sweet chocolate chips
Bake at 350 degrees for no more than 20 minutes or done.
You can also do a chocolate molten cake by not baking as long, use a cupcake cup and invert to plate
You can make cupcakes, a 13×9 cake or two small cake
Make a ganache of chocolate fudge for over the top and spread while cake is hot (to seal in the freshness of the cake)
Heat 2C semi sweet chocolate chips until melted
stir in ½ C of heavy cream
